Travels through the land of the Pharaohs, " Where Ancient meets Modern " -  Part One

Welcome to my adventure through one of the world’s oldest cultures! Any journey through Egypt promises the traveller to be an incredible experience, filled with history, culture, and natural beauty. I’d read so much and had spoken to so many who had travelled the ancient lands of Egypt, but I was not prepared to be captivated the way I was by what the land of the pharaohs offers. Egypt is a land where ancient mysteries and modern life coexist in harmony. Egypt offers a unique blend of the past and the present, creating an unforgettable travel experience. Come with me as I relive my journey to the land of the Pharaohs. I hope you enjoy, David

Day 1: Arrival in Cairo

My adventure began the moment I landed in Cairo, the capital city of Egypt. Cairo is a bustling city, it’s a vibrant mix of history and modernity, where the towering minarets of mosques and churches from bygone days meet the towering skyscrapers of the 21st century. First stop, my hotel for a well-earned shower, before commencing my exploration of this energetic city. Egypt had been on my radar for a long time, and actually being here was slowly sinking in. The smells, the sounds, the sights, it was like stepping back into another era. The hustle and bustle of traffic, pedestrians going about their daily lives, and market vendors touting their wares, the city is alive, I felt alive. First on my list of sights to see was the Egyptian Museum. Mummies and sarcophagi, the mere thought of these excites me, and I didn’t want to delay. The museum was my first planned visit in Egypt. The fact that so many artifacts, the treasures of Tutankhamun and mummies survive to this day is nothing short of amazing. I lost myself as I wandered the museum, like a child in a sweet shop, imagining, what life would have been like back then.

As I drifted, so did time, and before I knew it, I was being ushered out of the museum as it was closing. As much as I wanted to stay and explore the museum more, being asked to leave wasn’t all bad, for the next part of my adventure was to begin. Strolling the streets of Cairo in search of an eatery, somewhere where I could sit, watch the world go by, and soak up the ambience of this energetic city.

Day 2: Giza - The Pyramids and Sphinx

The day I had been eagerly anticipating had finally arrived, and it began with an early start that held the promise of fulfilling a dream I'd harboured for many years. After a delightful breakfast at my hotel, my driver arrived to whisk me away to the Giza Plateau, where the legendary pyramids and the enigmatic Sphinx patiently awaited my arrival. As I gazed out of the car window during the drive, a sense of excitement and wonder filled me. In the distance, an awe-inspiring sight gradually came into view – the colossal pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, collectively known as the Pyramids of Giza. These ancient wonders loomed tall and proud against the backdrop of the endless desert. It was a vision that had played in my mind for over a decade, and now, it was coming to life before my very eyes.

Upon arriving at the Giza Plateau, I was warmly welcomed by Mohammad, my knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide. His beaming smile assured me that I was in for a remarkable experience as we embarked on our journey to explore these architectural marvels. With each step, Mohammad shared a wealth of information, bringing the history and significance of these structures to life. The Pyramids of Giza, each with its unique character and history, were even more astounding up close. Their sheer size and the precision of their construction left me gobsmacked. I had encountered these ancient wonders in countless books and documentaries, but nothing compared to witnessing their grandeur in person. It was a surreal moment as if I had stepped into the pages of history and was now walking among giants. As Mohammad continued to reveal the mysteries and stories hidden within these colossal structures, I couldn't help but be captivated by his passion for Egyptology. His insights and explanations added a layer of understanding that enhanced my appreciation for the pyramids and their significance in the world's cultural heritage.

Exploring the Pyramids of Giza was an experience beyond my wildest dreams. It was a day filled with wonder, knowledge, and the realisation of a long-held aspiration. With each step I took in the presence of these ancient giants, I felt a profound connection to the past and a deep appreciation for the enduring legacy of the Egyptian civilisation.

Day 3: Exploring Old Cairo

Cairo, the vibrant heart of Egypt, is a city that has so much to offer, especially for a history enthusiast like me. On the third day of my Egyptian adventure, I set my sights on Old Cairo, also known as "Islamic Cairo," a UNESCO-listed part of the city. The prospect of exploring this historically rich area filled me with excitement and anticipation. As I ventured into this mesmerising part of the city, I found myself standing in awe of the magnificent Sultan Hassan Mosque. This architectural masterpiece was a testament to the skill and artistry of ancient builders, and it left me humbled by its grandeur. Every corner of the mosque seemed to whisper stories of bygone eras.

My day continued to unfold with visits to other historical gems, such as the Al-Rifa'i Mosque and the Coptic Museum. Each site held its own unique charm and significance, adding layers to the rich tapestry of Cairo's history. The grandeur of these buildings and the wealth of knowledge they held were truly captivating. One of the highlights of my day was exploring the Salah El-Din Citadel. As I stood within its formidable walls, I couldn't help but feel a deep connection to the past. The views from the citadel allowed me to take in the sprawling beauty of Cairo, and I marvelled at how the city had evolved over the centuries.

After a morning of exploration and cultural enrichment, I made my way to the enchanting Khan El Khalili Bazaar. This bustling marketplace is one of my favourite places in Cairo. It's a vibrant hub where history and modern life coexist seamlessly. Here, I had the opportunity to shop for souvenirs, sample delicious street food, and truly immerse myself in the lively atmosphere of a traditional Middle Eastern market.

“One of the most cherished moments of my visit was finding a quiet corner in a teahouse within the bazaar. As I sipped tea and observed the bustling crowds, I felt like a traveller from another time, woven into the rich tapestry of Cairo's history. Cairo had once again opened its arms to me, allowing me to delve deeper into its captivating past and vibrant present”.
